My name is Sean Fitzgerald, and this is my seventh year as the Assistant Principal at IMS. I am a graduate of the Ipswich Schools and am very proud to call myself a Tiger. I feel privileged to work alongside our skilled and dedicated team of educators and to have the opportunity to guide the students of Ipswich in their journeys through middle school.
Before coming into this role, I taught for four years on the other side of the building at Ipswich High School and spent five years in the Boston Public Schools where I was a special education teacher. I am grateful to be teaching in the town that has always felt like home and for the opportunities and experiences that growing up in Ipswich afforded me. Even as I get older, many of the stories that students share with me are very relatable, as I remember those very similar experiences from my own childhood.
As an educator, I strive to always do what is in the best interest of our students and support them in whatever way necessary, whether it be inside or outside of the classroom. Along with our Principal, Peter Ginolfi, our goal is to create a school environment that challenges students to push their thinking, promotes productive struggle, allows students to make mistakes and learn from them and create citizens that will be successful wherever their lives take them.
While my family currently resides in nearby Newburyport, Ipswich has always and will always be “home.” I can still remember the way the community welcomed my family and the friends that showed me the ropes of being a second grader at the Doyon School after we moved here at the tail end of the school year in 1996. I am thankful to have been educated in a supportive and vibrant school community that prepared me for life beyond Ipswich and remain passionate about passing these opportunities and guidance on to the current children of Ipswich. Outside of school, I am an avid sports fan and can often be found reminiscing about my own glory days as an athlete at Ipswich High. Today, I enjoy passing on these lessons and memories to my own elementary age children, coaching their teams.
I am excited to continue building relationships and working with the students and families in Ipswich. There is not a day that goes by that I am not impressed with the work of our teachers and students and am reminded in some way as to why, I truly believe that Ipswich is a great place to be!
